Introduction

Brief History

As the economic and social environment changes, security management and related business types are expanding, which has resulted in higher demand for security managers. Therefore, integrating the three specialized subjects of crime prevention, police intervention and security management, the Department of Security Management was set up and started to officially recruit students in 2007-08.

Among all the Schools of Social Science in Taiwan, our university was the first to have a Security Management Department. In the first academic year, a class of 60 students enrolled, and then two class cohorts enrolled from 2008-09. Up to now, the number of undergraduate students in the department has already reached four hundred.

Our department was renamed the Department of Security Management and Community Affairs for the first time in the 2011-12 academic year and then renamed the Department of Security Management and Social Work for the second time in the 2014-15 academic year.

To deepen the development of both security management and community affairs, and to pursue the prosperity of workplace organization and cultivate higher-level workers, a Master’s Program and a Work-experience Master’s Program, in 2013-14 and 2015-16, respectively, were authorized for establishment by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan.

In recent years, the department has been increasingly pro-active to cultivate security management professionals. Not only we continue to teach students security management expertise and skills, but also emphasize a more complete professional education by renaming as Department of Criminal Justice in 2017-18. Thus, our department now has undergraduate and master’s programs in Criminal Justice as well as work-experience masters’ programs in Cross-Strait and Criminal Justice, granting Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees.

Missions / Goals / Objectives

The department educational mission is to train expertise-based personnel for security management-related areas, to integrate criminal justice and security management theory and practice, to connect knowledge and ability to implement, as well as to combine learning and utilization of what is learned so that students are equipped with expertise, skills and international perspective. We focus on Four Goals:

(1) to teach security management and community affairs expertise;

(2) to cultivate communication, planning and coordination skills;

(3) to develop security management professionals with apt coping skills; and
